I’ve not been blogging for a looong time. I’m very sorry about that, I’ve missed out on jotting down some really cool stuff from the girls’ life. Ella is going to be three this year! And Lilly is turning one. We’ve spent many nights at the dinner table in absolute astonishment wondering where the last year of our life went. We feel like we’ve missed out on Lilly being a baby. Sure we’ve been here and enjoyed every aspect of her development, but we haven’t documented it like we used to. Now add in number three coming in February and life is just full of well, life. I never imagined myself really having kids, and certainly never saw myself having three children. But God had a different plan and I am so happy He did. We have decided to go into delivery without knowing what we are having this time around. I think that is a very special thing to learn the very nature of your child at birth and I am so glad we’ve settled on it at least once. Lilly and Ella are starting to be more like playmates lately. Lilly is quite adamant sometimes about getting her big sister to play with her. She will even crawl over Ella and basically lay on top of her to get her attention. Ella takes it all in stride very well for the most part. There are times when her almost three-ness comes out but in general she does very good at being the subject of infant attacks.

It is so amazing to see how very unique each child is. As Lilly’s personality develops it is quite clear that she is nothing like her sister in some respects. Lilly has less patience for some things (like food) and when she wants something she gets mad before even indicating a desire for it.

We have started potty training in earnest with Ella and all seems to be going well. In fact she is so proud of herself for wearing panties that she fights us when we put a diaper on for overnight. They are both growing up so very fast and I fear adding in a third may make it all seem faster. I’ve decided that I need to make an even stronger effort to get back to blogging their lives so that someday, I can present all the little details of their youth to them for their own education and entertainment. We’ll see how I do.

So just what exactly can you stomach as a person? Become a parent and you will find there are likely no limits to what you can stand. Recently we have been trying to hype the concept of the potty for Ella in preparation for Lilly’s arrival. A few nights ago (I forget if it was before or after Lilly came home), Ella came running up to me whining and holding her hands out in front of her. She had a distraught look on her face and so naturally I was concerned. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be poo on her fingers. Ella had been putting her hands down her diaper and discovered she needed to go potty (make that, had gone potty). After cleaning her all up, I tried to explain that she needed to let me know before she went potty and we could start learning all about it.

Now fast forward to last night. We put Ella to bed at normal time, she had a wonderful chat with Grammy on Skype just before. Everything seemed like a normal night. Later around 9pm she cried out which isn’t all that unusual so we thought nothing of it. When we went in to check on her on our way to bed, we discovered she had gotten sick in the bed. We woke her up so we could change her clothes and her bed and decided to bring her to our bed, her mattress was soaked and her room did not smell too good. We got her settled in our bed and back to sleep only for her to wake up a little later and get sick again. She was so pitiful, she kept saying “I wanna go night-night, Dada”. We got her cleaned up again and settled and Mommy and Lilly moved rooms just in case she had something contagious. One more time she woke up but she caught herself before she got sick. As I sat up she knew it was coming, the poor little hing was so scared about having to throw up. I coached her through it and cleaned her up again. The amazing thing is the parental ability to sleep with the smell of vomit in your nose all night. This parenting thing isn’t always easy, and sometimes it will make you cry, but God certainly makes you strong enough to survive it. I would never have been able to sleep through the night with that smell if it weren’t my daughter that was sick.

So today we were feeling a bit more normal. Stomach bugs are gone, sleep is slowly coming back to each of us (more to Daddy and Ella than Mommy) and all is finally somewhat well. We were working on the cabinet we store all of the baby stuff in in our kitchen and Ella was happily coloring on the newspaper with an ink pen. Keep that in mind, it will be important later. Ella started out on the ottoman but was poking through the paper (lovely artwork on the ottoman now, in ink). I moved her to a small side table so she could keep coloring and she watched me climb into a chair and work in the cabinet. “Careful, Dada,” she would call as she busily colored away. Later, she started ripping the papers and throwing them all around so I went to check on her. At first, I only saw it on her hand. “No big deal,” I thought, baby wipes are amazing ink removers. Then I looked down as Ella looked up. I immediately busted out laughing, Mommy wanted to know what was going on and when I showed her, she turned around and hid her face as her shoulders shook. I asked if she was laughing or crying and there was no response. After a few minutes she told me to stop laughing after she composed herself so she could inform Ella that this was not something we do.

“Is this paper?” Mommy asked.

“No, not,” Ella replied.

“What do we color on, Ella? Only paper, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Are your hands paper?”

“Yeah!”

“No ma’am, they aren’t. And your face isn’t either. We don’t color on our face, that isn’t funny.”

(laughter) “Funny, paper!” (more laughter)

Luckily, baby wipes are amazing little cloths of wonder when it comes to situations like this. I managed to clean her up completely with one wipe. This definitely goes in the category of very difficult to be mad about.

Last night we were working on Lilly’s nursery to add a little personalization to the room since it used to be Ella’s. I was installing some shelves and wooden cutouts of jungle animals on a wall and Ella was in and out of the room playing while we worked. I had climbed up on a step-stool to drill a hold for one of the animals when I felt two tiny hands on the backs of my legs. Then I heard “careful, Dada” and looked back to see Ella supporting me on the ladder in case I might fall. It was one of the sweetest things I’ve ever experienced. She was genuinely trying to help. When I got off the stool, she grabbed both my legs and hugged them tight. She loves to help out around the house and when Dada has a hammer, she is right in the middle. We bought some bookshelves to put in Lilly’s closet until I can build in the shelves like I did in Ella’s room and when I was hammering the back board onto them, Ella insisted on helping. So I held nail and helped guide the hammer and Ella drove all of the nails in on two of the bookcases. She had a HUGE smile the whole time, my little helper is the best any dad could ask for!

Last night I was driving home from visiting Mommy in the hospital with Ella and I happened to look up in the rear-view after adjusting it for night-time glare. As we passed under a street light there was that momentary beam of light that illuminates for just a moment and then its gone. I had a flash memory of being little and falling asleep in the car. I was just awake enough for my eyes and brain to register the lights but not enough to be totally aware of them. In that moment I made an interesting connection in my brain. I had moved forward in the car but a piece of me was still in the back seat, in angelic sleep as we traveled home. It was just one of those indescribable moments when all you can really say to yourself is, “Wow, I’m a dad!”.

By the way, do not worry about the whole “Mommy in the hospital” thing; the doctors were concerned over her blood pressures and protein levels but everything has checked out so far. She should be coming home tonight or tomorrow morning, they just wanted to watch her and the baby closely for a consistent amount of time. If you remember our hospital follies from Ella’s time in the womb, then this is basically the same stuff that is going on this time around.

This morning as I was working on shelving for the bonus room closet, Ella and Mommy were outside playing in the driveway. We saw a rescue truck and a firetruck go into the back of the neighborhood. Hopefully, everything is okay, but when I heard the trucks coming back, I walked Ella to the end of the driveway so she could see the truck (who doesn’t like a big red firetruck, right?). She started waving as they came down the hill and when they got to our cul-de-sac, they stopped. Uh-oh, I thought to myself. Maybe they don’t like kids? Nah, that couldn’t be it. Then I thought maybe they were going to run the lights for her, nope a fireman got out of the truck. Hmm…what’s going on here? Ella was smiling and waving, then I saw it. A bright red plastic fireman’s hat. Apparently they keep some in the engines to give to little kids. Of course, Ella clammed up and clung to me, but she did say thank you to the nice fireman. It was such an unexpected little surprise. Now she’s been running around the house having Mommy and Daddy wear the hat then immediately give it back to her. I think she liked it even if she was a little scared.

There are likely three ways you can take that title. First, you could be saying to yourself, “I always knew it was just a matter of time…”. Second, you could be scratching your head waiting for an explanation. Third you could be thinking I have been overtaken by the imbalance of estrogen to testosterone that is my household . The real answer is none of the above. When we got home from Church this morning, I got Ella out of the car and brought her inside, I was carrying out bible which hase a cover with a strap on it for a handle. I was just carrying it by the handle and it was hanging by my side. Ella came up and reach for it so I handed the strap to her. As she walked away, she said ” Look Mama, Dada’s purse”. She walked all around the house carrying my “purse” and feeling quite satisfied with herself. She giggled about it for a little while. The mind of an almost-two year old is so entertaining and creative. Have I said how much I love my little girl?

Meanwhile, back at the Mommy-cave… apparently Lilly has enrolled herself in pre-birth gymnastics & karate classes, according to Mama. All during services this morning I could see Mommy sort of jerk and hold her belly as her eyes rolled just a bit. She was enjoying feeling the baby move, but it was apparently an extremely active session of punches and kicks for her. When we got to Sunday School, she said that the baby was settled and napping. She has since been just as aggressive in her kicking and punching this afternoon and evening. I am so blessed to have two little ladies to fill my home with love and a wonderful, beautiful wife to share them with!

We’ve been gradually trying to introduce Ella to her new room. Today was a first in that she successfully napped in her new room. Inspired by that bit of success, Mommy put her to bed this evening in her new room. It took a little bit of convincing and she had to lay in the floor beside the bed for a while. In the end, she went to sleep and Mommy had to process the inevitable truth that our little girl is slowly growing up. We’re cautiously optimistic that this is the start of a new phase for Ella, sleeping in her “big girl” bed. If she can’t handle the change, the crib is open for now, since Lilly doesn’t have need of it just yet.

Okay, so a new closet may not seem like all that big of news, but once you see what I did, hopefully you’ll see why I’m so excited. Since Ella is getting a new room, we decided to take the opportunity to reorganize the closet and get rid of the crummy wire shelving that was always in place in the room. I built some wood shelves out of Maple plywood to clean up the look of the closet. I was a little bit nervous about making the shelves, this was quite a bit different than any undertaking I have ever pursued before. I tried to be very careful, sanding, staining and applying polyurethane. I did quite well with all of the steps until I started gluing one of the “L” shaped shelves up. I had everything glued and started clamping when I noticed a half-inch overlap between the two pieces. In a panic, I picked up a hammer quickly and started whacking away to line up the pieces, nearly destroying the edge of my shelf! In the long run, I was lucky that it was the back edge of the top shelf. In the end, I’d say they turned out quite well!

So by now, this information has leaked to who knows how many different email accounts and social networking sites (okay, maybe ten email accounts and Facebook). Anyway, we are having another baby! (I know, not exactly a surprise at twenty-one weeks when it likely everyone has seen the ultra-sound by now.) We also found out that we are having another girl! That information is at least new-ish (found out on Wednesday). I couldn’t be more excited! I love my little Ella, and now I get two little princesses to dote on and pour out all my love. I know (we have said it to ourselves as well), girls are all we know, so of course we think they are easier. I think either way, we were secretly hoping to have another girl. Please understand, we value any child God blesses us with equally, but pigtails and pink clothes are just awesome!

If you haven’t noticed, I changed the title of the blog. This is no longer just about Ella, we have to include our second little angel in this blog now too! (If you are wondering, we do have a name selected, but no middle name just yet, so I thought I would wait to post all of that. Again, not all that close-kept of a secret, but humor me ). We have lots of sonogram pictures to post, just like I have months of pictures of Ella to post, some day when I am done prepping a second room in our home and have energy after playing with Ella all evening, I’ll try to get close to caught up. For now, enjoy the twenty-week ultrasound of our second little beauty!

All was well from this set of doctor visits. Mommy’s blood pressure was up (I tell her not to be so nervous, but she still is). The baby is about 1 pound and kicking and moving a LOT more than Ella ever did. She moved a lot during the ultrasound and we got to see her yawn.

So much to write, so much to say. I don’t know if I’ll remember it all. Let’s start with the latest events in Ella’s life.

As I am sitting here trying to fill out this post, I realize I started it over a month ago. It is astounding to me how much can change in a child’s life in such a small amount of time. At the time I was going to publish this note, Ella had just started to gain an interest in crayons and drawing. Now she likes to go through several pieces of paper at a time and asks for certain colors (whether she knows what she asking for or not, I cannot say for sure).

Her speech and vocabulary have changed drastically. She is in the habit of forming completely decipherable sentences at this point. In July, she was saying simple two to three word phrases, now she can say “Mama, where are you?” or “Dada, what you doing?” and some other questions. She can sign most of the signs for “The Itsy, Bitsy Spider” and knows most of the letters of the alphabet (even when we show them to her in random order). She likes to count, she does skip a few numbers here and there, but at least she is doing it. At the end of July, we took a trip to Statesboro, Ga to visit family and she was in a WalMart reading letters off a sign in the window. We got a few comments from other shoppers inquiring on her age (she wasn’t being all that quiet with her reading) and they seemed impressed with the letters she knew. I always take the “what do I know, I’ve never done this before” level of humbleness on these things. I just assume that she is roughly at the level of all other kids her age and go one marveling at how she learns.

I would love to fill in all the amazing details that I haven’t blogged about in the past few months, but I’m afraid even I don’t remember all of them. There is something wrong with that I am sure, and I do appologize for not remember every event in her life, but They happen so fast and there are so many, I don’t know how I could ever keep them all straight. I do know that we have developed a HUGE love of Curious George. She will ask for episodes continuously (we have to cut her off and distract her to keep her from watching too much TV). She likes the few books we have of him so much that we read them two and three times in a row. She has memorized some of her other books to the point I can quiz her on them without even having the book and she can answer (animal / object sounds from “Mr. Brown can Moo”, phrases out of “Hop on Pop”).

This weekend was Ella’s Baptism! We were so blessed to have our family with us on this important day. We were pleasantly surprised at how well Ella behaved during the worship service. In fact she only squirmed a little at the ministers when they laid hands on her to do the baptism. I never thought a lot about baptism before having my own child, but as I’ve taken on this awesome responsibility, I’ve seen God’s hands in so many things on a daily basis. Devoting my life to raising my daughter by the example of Christ is not even remotely adequate for all the blessings my family receives on a daily basis. I can only hope I am instilling in my daughter the love and respect of our Lord I feel in my own heart.

Ella has graduated to a simple booster seat at the dinner table. This has been a bit bittersweet. Now at breakfast and dinner, there’s this little person sitting at our table between us instead of sitting to the side in a high chair. She seems to really enjoy eating at the table with us now. She actually has started being a little receptive to more foods lately too, which is good since she was sustaining herself on applesauce and PBJs. Its so cute when she eats and kicks her little legs under the table, it makes her bob up and down just little. On the downside, we were cleaning up the high chair to store it and discovered a terrifying tidbit of information about how not to maintain a high chair. When we took the cover off the chair, this horribly foul odor emanated from a pool of disgusting-ness that had been hiding underneath. I’m guessing a little bit of milk, a little bit of peas, a little bit of who knows what else. We’ll know better for the new seat, clean it out thoroughly at least once a week. Whew! Who knew baby stuff (other than poop) could stink so bad? And believe me, we’ve smelled some serious poop.

It finally happened! Ella has finally started walking a little bit on her own! She has gradually worked her way into walking a little bit between us and we can inch our way apart. That’s been going on for a few weeks now. Tonight, we got her to go between us over and over again. We started calling them baby touch and gos because she got to the point where she would come to me and touch long enough to turn around and go to Momma. This went on for about an hour. She giggled, laughed, squealed, she even managed to slow down and occasionally stop in between us before finishing the trip. We had her walking over half the length of the living room between us. Her pajama pants started falling down and getting in the way of her feet so she finished her grand walking tour in just a diaper. I think from the squeals that she was having a really good time!

Our little girl is turning into a toddler! It is so awesome and so sad at the same time. She’s picking up new words all the time, and now that she’s probably less than a month from being an old pro at walking, our hands are getting fuller! We have to get the rest of our baby-proofing stuff in place. She has started pulling spices out of the spice rack and she just laughs and says NO! when we tell her no. She thinks its a great game to repeat no after we say it with great exuberance.

So I’m trying again, but making no promises. January and February brought lots of changes to the Braxton household. We sold our truck in order to buy a “mini” as Mommy calls it. She doesn’t want me calling it a minivan because that’s too uncool. We love the mini, there is a ton of space now and it it so much easier to get Ella in and out of her car seat. I wired in a DVD system with headrest monitors for long trips and Ella went nuts when we went for a test-ride. It is by far a big hit with Ella!

We have an ever expanding vocabulary of signs and spoken words and an emerging toddler-esque attitude to go with it. “NO” is our favorite word in response to Mommy or Daddy trying to get Ella to do anything. Who knew putting on P.J.s would cause a temper tantrum. Ella is growing right along on the standard charts and everything is great according ot the pediatrician. She still isn’t independently walking, but she is deffinitely getting where she wants to go! She has a few walk-behind toys that she can pretty much run behind all through the house and you’re advised not to get in her way!

“Curious George” and Elmo are two of Ella’s favorite things to watch. Daddy actually like Curious George as well. It is a pretty cute kids show and it is much more educational than what they show on Cartoon Network (which we don;t watch much anymore). Thank goodness for PBS Kids. Ella can recognize a few sign-language letters and several animals and words. We can sign “good girl” to her and she knows what we are saying. As much as we miss that tiny little bundle we came home with, I am loving every moment of watching her grow and develop her own personality and view of the world. The simplest things to Mommy and I are new and wonderful discoveries to her. Its like seeing the world for the first time through Ella.

Mommy went to a few Church consignment sales yesterday and cleaned up on new toys for Ella. She’s been out-growing some of her toys either from using them so much and getting bored or from them being for younger kids than she is now. But the new haul of toys was a hit. As we were carrying them in, Ella was crying on the other side of the gate because she couldn’t play with them right away. Now we just have to put away some of the other toys for a while or we won’t have enough space to find Ella in her play room!

Daddy has been extremely lazy in writing posts for the blog. There have been several post-worthy things that I have missed due to laziness or just being so busy enjoying Ella’s life and new discoveries. I am not making a resolution, so don’t hold your breath. I’m not going to promise to write more frequently just to break it later. I will however try my best to journal all the major things that occur. Ella is not independently walking just yet but she does LOVE to walk. Her grip on your fingers as you help her around a room is gradually getting looser and looser so I am sure she is close to ready to walk on her own. At that point, Mommy and I are seriously concerned about how much work we are going to have in just keeping up with her. Ella doesn’t really walk anywhere. If she has no restriction on speed, most everything is a carefully coordinated half-fall, half-jog to wherever she’s going. Her little walk-behind toyis the perfect mechanism for her to go all about the house. She’s now figured out to walk around the toy and slide it if she gets stuck on a cabinet or in a corner.

We’ve been introducing all sorts of new foods. Some she likes, some not so much. Ella is a big fan of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and she loves sweets. Fruits and veggies are still her big go to foods since she’s not so much into the texture of meats still. She has eaten some significant amount of chicken when cut into a small finger-food size, but she’s a little picky with the meat. She is also gaining significant independence in the realm of feeding herself. She does not want her food in small pieces aymore and if you tear off a piece of something for her to eat she will bat it away and reach for the whole object.

Sign language has probably been one of the best ideas we could have had. Ella signs for food and milk seperately with the appropriate signs and can say “please” and “thank you” very well. In fact, “please” has suddenly flipped a switch in Ella’s brain that says “I can get whatever I want if I sign please first”. This has led to many a tantrum from our little angel as she learns that sometimes, even “please” isn’t all that magic of a word. We taught her the sign for baby and her interpretation is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. You are supposed to cradle your hands at your waist and rock your arms back and forth like you are holding a baby. Ella puts her palms on her belly and shakes her whole body back and forth with a big smile on her face while she says baby (or rather, bah-bee). She can also point to her nose, her ear and her teeth; and she knows how to show your her tongue. Sometimes, she can even tell you how old she is when you ask. It took a little while to teach her how to do that one but it is very cute to see.

We gave Ella her first “big-girl” bath the other night. She has graduated out of her little baby tub and into our large garden tub. I’m not sure who had more fun that night, Ella or Daddy. Mommy was sad to see another milestone come and go, but it was a good thing. Ella had so much fun that she wouldn’t let us take her out of the tub when it was time. I would ask her if she was ready to come out and she would shake her head no and turn away from me. In her old tub, she would gladly hold out her hands and reach up to be taken out of the water.

I’m sure there are plenty of things I have missed that she has done since my last post, its been a busy time since she turned one. I hope in the coming year I’ll be a bit more able to post timely milestone achievements and keep this blog as entertaining as I hope it has been in the past.

Today was another first in Ella’s journey through life. Those first few tentative steps without any phyical support. Our baby girl “walked” today on her own. We play a little game where I hold her up and then let go and she falls forward into my lap. She laughs and giggles and really enjoys the game. Today she changed it on me when she stood still for more than a few seconds without falling after I let go. She started to move her left leg just as she started to fall over. I tried again and she made a full step before falling. Mommy was filming and wanted to be in on the action and she got almost four steps out of Ella in a row! I’m sure this changes more than just the little fall over game we play as we are about to move into the mobile child stage of life and we are behind the curve on baby-proofing and safety devices…I am going to be busy

What a resounding success Ella’s first birthday party was! With so many people in our home, we were reminded of the smallness of the rooms in our house, but it was so much fun to have so many friends here just to celebrate our baby girl’s first year on Earth. There were so many little kids here for Ella to play with and I think she had a blast with them all! We got so many nice things for Ella that we’re going to gradually let her have a few new things at a time just to keep her from being overwhelmed. Mommy and Gamma did an awesome job on decorations and thanks to Jen, we had food rolling out to the tables with time to spare. Thank you to everyone who could make it to the party and special thanks to all those who helped setup! I’ll try to update this post with some pictures after I get them ready. If I don’t succeed with that, they will be in the gallery.

She is now just two weeks shy of her first birthday……………..(sorry, mommy had to try to hold back the tears after writing that…ok I’m good now So anyway, now she has 8 words/phrases!!! She says: dada, mama, her version of doggie, ball, uh-oh, and kack kack (which we LOVE), baby (which she says very very well and often) and just yesterday she said the phrase good girl!!!!! All of her words and her voice is so cute. She can now sign a few things as well: milk, eat, ball, more (sometimes),thank you, lion, fish (super cute) and butterfly (which is sooooooo cute!). She also recognizes some of these things–whenever she sees a baby out in public she says baby over and over and we have a digital picture frame that has only pictures of her on it and she loooves to look at that and say baby at every picture! she also signs butterfly whenever she sees a picture of one (and we have several books with butterflies in them) and they are on her mobile in her crib and there is a painting of one in her room and whenever she sees them she signs it!! Dadd y has also been hard at work trying to teach her some animal sounds on her little pop up toy. she knows that lamb, kacks at the chicken and sometimes knows to “boo” at the cow!

She is moving a lot faster as well. Not walking yet but getting closer. She has pulled herself up to a standing position once! If you stand her up on the furniture or the walls she will cruise her way around it as fast as she can!! And she will find a way to get to what she wants. She will also “walk” with the help of her walking toys and if you let her hold on to your fingers. She will walk all over the house if you let her hold your hands!! She is not ready to try it on her own though. She still needs the security of mommy and daddy right now. And she now dances!!!!! I think it’s the cutest thing I have ever seen! She will dance sitting and standing and she shakes her little booty as well as bobbing her head!!! So funny.

We are also in the process of learning “no touch” which is a bit difficult at some points due to the amount of sass she has!

She is just a joy and the light of our lives! We fall in love with her more everyday!

Tonight was bath night again. Mommy said that Ella was “kaak”-ing a lot during the day so we thought we would try reinforcing what she’s apparently learned. Her duckie was downstairs since she had so much fun quacking at it on Monday so when we headed up for bath, I gave it to her to see if she would start quacking. She did a few times, but not very loudly, she was busy commanding all of the attention of both of us and soaking it all up. When we got her into the bath, we had all of her bath toys in the tub and Mommy asked her where the duckie was. She looked at the water a little pensively and let out a tenuous “kaak” before she reached down and grabbed the rubber duckie. We weren’t very successful with repeat attempts, but it was fun to see her try and call the duck out of the group!

We think Ella may also be starting to sign back to us, but we’re both on the fence about it. I was feeding her this evening and I would sign thank you after I’d given her something to eat. She started making a similar sign/motion back to me and I had Mommy watch her to see what she thought. She didn’t repeat it very much, but it was a step in the right direction. She also semi-signs for milk when we get a bottle ready for her. It is kind of a hybrid between a wave and the sign for milk so we’re not sure what she’s trying to do there.

“Kaak, kaak!” was her response.

We, like all new parents, were overly impressed with her ability to mimic and remember and gave her a round of applause and laughed with glee. She responded by giving us a big smile and “kaak, kaak”-ing the remainder of her bath. She continued to quack while we got her dressed for bed and played with her until bottle time. It is so cute when she does the quack, especially since she can’t get the “cw” sound of qu just yet.

Today was day number three without very many good naps throughout the day. She did manage to get one good nap in after church before Great Grandma left but that was all the napping for the day. Mommy had a baby shower to attend (which of course, she made the cake for) which meant some Daddy-Ella time this evening. Like I said in the previous post, Ella gets a little crazy when she’s really tired. Today was no exception to that rule. Shortly before Mommy left, Ella was scooting around in her play room when she got hold of a couple of packs of baby wipes. She loves the wipes packages for some reason, maybe because they are so crackly. She started scooting around holding on to the wipes but kept kicking them out of her hands, so she picked them up and held them in the arm (one in each hand) and scooted from her playroom into the kitchen keeping the wipes with her for the trip. If you’ve ever seen the old World’s Strongest Man competitions from the 70′s and 80′s with Howard Coselle, you could imagine Magnus ver Magnuson doing the 50kg keg lift with one in each arm and shuffling across the competition area on his butt. Once she got half-way through the kitchen, she dropped the wipes and started spinning circles with her hands in the air. It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen and yes, I got video . When Mommy left, I moved her back into her playroom so I could work on some laundry and she did the whole routine all over again. Only this time, she made her way to one of the cabinets and pulled most of the contents out into the floor. She really likes the plastic containers for some reason.

Today we went to the Gilmer County Apple Festival. Well, the county fair portion of it at any rate. Great Grandma was here visiting with Ella and we took her with us to the most well-known of north Georgia festivities. It was also the coldest day of the year, I think. It was likely in the 30′s all day when you factor in the wind. We have since come to find out that there is more to the festival than the over-priced craft and food tents that were setup on the Lions Club fairgrounds. You can actually go from orchard to orchard in Elijay and take tours and sample cider and all other sorts of products from the local growers. With this little outing, we were hoping that our timing would allow Ella a nap in the car on the way to the festival (she hadn’t slept that much the day before so we wanted to try to catch her up) but we were wrong! She stayed awake all day. We got home and tried to put her down for an afternoon nap…45 minutes of screaming and crying later, we decided she would be better off just going to bed early.

Baby girl gets a little whacky when she’s tired and as much as I hate to keep her from her routine, it is very entertaining when she hits her breaking point and starts acting goofy.

Last Sunday (October 4) we went to watch Poppy complete his first-ever triathlon. It was a very cool event, even as early as we had to get moving in order to get there. The competition was held at Lake Lanier at a resort-beach-type place they have there. We had to get up around 4:30am to make it there in time for the start of the race, but Ella was way ahead of us. We hustled through the morning routine of showering and eating and dressing and feeding the baby (not necessarily in that order, of course) and hurriedly got out the door and on our way for the hour-plus drive. Ella has not been sleeping in her carseat much lately, so she stayed awake and played with Auntie Lindsey on our way. By the time the event was over (10:00am, I believe), Ella was exhausted! She feel asleep in Gramma’s arms and it was obvious that Mommy was itching to get in on some of that good time. Once Mommy had her in her arms I told her to just hang on to her because I was afraid too much handing around would wake Ella up. I am so glad Mommy persisted. If I never knew anything good and pure and absolutely perfect in my life, then I would have a point of reference that could never be questioned. After she got past 3 moths old, Ella never wanted to sleep on us much anymore, and this was the most emotionally pleasing experience I think I could ever have. She sunk her little face into my chest and tucked her arms in for warmth and let out one heavy sigh and never made another peep. Normally I start to notice her weight after I’ve carried for a few minutes; I think my arm could have set on fire and I wouldn’t have noticed. I didn’t realize how much I missed that sensation of having my baby girl in my arms fast asleep. This is absolutely a taste of heaven. A little slice of the pleasure of eternity all my own. That experience is one I will treasure the rest of my life, I don’t think I will ever forget exactly how I felt. Its one of those mental picture moments you always remember just like I remember how beautiful my wife looked coming down the aisle and how precious that little baby girl was when I first met her. I could ramble on for days on this topic, but I think you get the idea, this was AWESOME!

Ella has started to gain some independent mobility. I was sitting on the floor playing with her one morning a few weeks ago and propped her up against one of our ottomans to let her stand on her own a bit. She happened to notice the dogs (which she LOVES) on the other ottoman and she proceeded to take very tiny, uncertain steps across the floor using the ottoman to keep herself up. When she got to the end of the first one, she plopped in the floor and scooted on her bottom (she has yet to get the whole crawling thing down) and made her way to the second ottoman. When I propped her on the other ottoman she made her way to Cider and became very excited once she was within reach of her. We experimented with putting her on one end of the coffee table and the laptop on the other (something else she loves to bang on) and she eventually made her way to it. This was her first attempt so it was slow and unsteady.

She has since gotten pretty good at moving around assisted. She’s like a little monkey when she slides off of me into the floor from one of the chairs, she looks back up with a sneaky little grin that says “Look what I just did, Daddy!” She getting really fast at scooting on her bottom too. She has realized she can get to whatever she wants if she tries hard enough, I think we are in for some “fun” experiences ahead .

Today she was chasing Maddie all around our bonus room while Mommy hung laundry and did some crafts. Then she discovered the drum set that has always been there, but never held much interest for her. Apparently she didn’t do much with it, but she knows they are there now, so that could be a fun new experience for everyone as she figures out what they are.

Ella is starting to discover how to make all sorts of new sounds. Some she learns by mimicing us, others she figures out all on her own. She’s also starting to mimic word sounds. She can say whoa! and uh-oh (except it sounds like she’s saying uh-oi!) and of course Mommy and Daddy. The best sound in the world is when I walk through the front door after a long day at work at don’t even know where she is until I hear that sweet angel squeal “Daddy!”. She also says dadada which is her way of saying doggy, it has a distinct sound compared to when she is saying my name. She is such a little smarty!

So this past weekend, we traveled to Louisiana to visit with Auntie Megan, Uncle Shawn and the cousins Emily, Grace and Abby. We left around 7pm Wednesday night hoping to take advantage of Ella’s normal sleep schedule to make the trip easier on her. She took a long time to go to sleep and woke up at every stop we made, but she seemed to be okay with the trip in general. Considering she spent nine to ten hours in her car seat, I think she did exceptionally well!

Ella had a great time visiting and playing with her cousins and they seemed to have just as much fun. They seemed to enjoy the new toys that came along with us equally well. The Quinns happen to live in the town where Steel Magnolias was filmed! Since this is one of her all time favorite movies, Mommy got to visit the house from Steel Magnolias and some of the other areas of the town it was filmed in. Daddy got to enjoy some AWESOME authentic Louisiana cuisine. And everybody got to enjoy some quality family time together. Natchitoches (pronounced NAK-a-dish) is a beautiful little town with a very well maintained historic downtown and some pretty water front parks. Uncle Shawn coaches football at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. Their neighbor is quite the skilled cajun cook and we never were wanting for food the entire weekend. Mommy and Daddy got re-acquainted with seafood with boiled crab, boiled shrimp and fried shrimp po’ boys. He also cooked Jambalaya for the tailgate festivities at the ball game…yummy! We also sampled gumbo and red beans and rice from a local restaurant.

Driving to and from Louisiana we had the “pleasure” of driving through some of the heavy storms that pelted Georgia with flooding waters earlier this week. Poor Mommy had the driving shift every time we hit the rain. I don’t think that was very good for her other than the fact that she had something to keep her mind off of the lightning and thunder that was all around us. I wish I had thought to turn on the camcorder when we hit the storm on the way out there, the only way to describe it is to show pictures, it was so beautiful and scary at the same time.

Ella recently started two new performance tricks. She can clap her hands and she can flip her lips while she hums (makes a blbb-blbb-blbb sound). I am a bit late on this post, since she started doing these a few weeks ago, but better late than never. I do have video of her doing them, but it may take a while to get it posted online. I’ll do what I can to get it available, but I’m not promising anything in the near term .

Another work day for Mommy and so far, so good. I was a little scared this morning because Ella woke up crying around 5:30am. I figured that could not be a good sign. We got her up and started the day early. Mommy got to say bye to us both, which I always enjoy, so I hope she did too. An early day means early everything as I am learning. Ella quit eating early, leaving a good portion of her normally voraciously eaten bottle, played hard and went to nap early (8:30 vs 9:00). I got her down without too mcuh problem and quickly set about some chores figuring I didn’t have much time to lose. It turns out she’s been asleep nearly and hour now. I guess a dark, rainy day helps with sleep. So now I’m between chores and waiting for the call from my sweet daughter because I know if I start anything now, I won’t even get half-way done with it. She is such a sweet little girl, she’s so happy to just play her little heart out with her Mommy or Daddy, and those big smiles melt my heart.

Update 1:40PM:

So now I’ve got her down for afternoon nap. It came a little earlier than I was expecting, but she drained her bottle and talked herself to sleep after 30 minutes of babbling in her bed. Its been a great day so far. She was trying to get the dogs’ attention this afternoon, it was very cute. She’d wave at them and say “Dah…dah-dah.” That is a different sound than when she says “Da da da”. It was apparent she meant dogs because when she looked at me, the ‘D’ sound changed a little. Ella is clearly starting to discern the differences between the sounds Mommy and I make when we name things for her.

Update: The Next Morning:

My day alone with Ella continued on with a lot of fun. The afternoon nap pepped her right back up and she was a happy baby all over again. Mommy was home by the time she woke up so we had an extra playmate for the rest of the evening. We let Ella watch her first ever VeggieTales episode which was an amazing hit. She loved the silly characters and laughed at the screen. She kind of bobbed a little to the music at times but onl lasted for about 10 minutes of the show because it was bedtime by then. All in all, it was a wonderful day! I love Daddy Days!

We’ve managed to teach Ella how to eat food by herself when its smallest enough to hold in her hand. We started with some Gerber puffs. Very similar to cheerios but they disintegrate very fast. She took a while to get the idea of actually putting the food in her mouth, but now she’s a real pro. We’ve been giving her Cheerios lately while we eat dinner to give her a little snack and something to do. She’s gotten so sure of her ability to get the Cheerios into her mouth that she moves like a little conveyor belt pumping them into her mouth faster than she eats them. We end up having to take them away long enough for her to chew and swallow the ones in her mouth. Of course, with a mouthful of un-chewed Cheerios, she chokes a little on occasion and scares the crap out of Daddy.

She also LOVES oranges. If she has a few Cheerios in her grasp and you give her a taste of orange, she’ll drop everything and reach for the orange with a bit of desperation in her demeanor. She got a taste of Clementine tonight and she liked them just as well. I made the mistake of holding the plate within reach of her after giving her a taste and almost didn’t get it back. Its so much fun to see what she likes to eat and more so what she doesn’t. Those are the more dramatic reactions.

At eight months, Ella has begun to pull herself up to a standing position and hold herself there without any help. And at times thats WITHOUT ANY HELP, DADDY! In that way too independent way that babies can let you know their thoughts. Smacking Mommy and Daddy away when we try to help is becoming more routine. It would be fine, except that Ella smacks pretty hard with that pure, unrefined baby strength that all kids have since they have yet to learn to hold back just a little bit of what they have. She gets so excited about holding herself up and she does a little “booty bounce” sometimes if her toys jingle or play a little music. I know I’m partial, but its pretty much the cutest thing ever!

Last night after we fed Ella her last bottle for the evening, you would have thought we gave her baby speed. Usually, the last bottle is followed by a fussy period indicative of “I want to go to bed, now!”, not last night! A sudden burst of energy had Ella bouncing between Mommy and me on the floor and jumping up and down in our laps. She’s pulling up on her own now and she would hold herself up on the jumper and do a little baby butt-shaker dance. I cannot do the cuteness of the little shimmy justice with words, you totally had to be there. She probably kept up this little show of silliness for about a half hour before settling down and getting fussy like normal. She was all giggles and smiles during her show though. Mommy and I agreed we’ve never laughed as much as we do now. Those Johnson and Johnson commercials are right, having a baby does change everything. The good news is, its all a BLAST!

I’m sure there are moments in every parent’s life where they cringe over something their kid did when they weren’t looking. I think Mommy got her first one today. Ella has become quite agile at “crawling” backwards and rotating her body to go where she wants. So much so that she can pretty much hit any target she goes for. So I got a call today from Mommy during lunch and we were having our normal chit-chat. Then I got to hear of how Ella moved herself backwards and found one of the dog bones lying on the floor. No biggie, right? She’ll just find the bone play with it and move on. Yeah, right! Its a good thing she’s not at that age where EVERYTHING goes into her mouth for examination…oh, wait, she is. Yep, Mommy said she looked up and there Ella was, chewing on the dog bone. ICK! I guess she didn’t mind the taste, but still…it gives me the heebie geebies. I wonder what the dogs were thinking? “What the…? How come we can’t chew on her toys but she gets to chew on ours!” Oh well, I’ll bet it gets better when she can move in the direction of what she sees. “Target acquired, I’m going in!” Man we need to pick a LOT of stuff up around here…

We bought Ella a new car seat yesterday. She’s getting close to outgrowing the carrier so we got a convertible car seat for her that can last until she’s in school. Its so big! No one said they would keep getting bigger and not be that little beautiful bundle of wonderful that she was when she was born. I love watching her grow and change, but it makes me sad to say goodbye to the other carseat. We’ll obviously be keeping it for #2 whenever that occurs, but for now only the truck will be using the carrier. One part of me is happy (she’s heavy when she’s strapped into the infant seat and I’m trying to lug her into the truck) and another part of me is sad to see a portion of her life gone forever. Her new seat is pretty cool though. She’s got cup-holders and arm rests. It reclines in three different positions. She looks so small in it because it is built for kids up to 100 pounds. She fell asleep in it today and actually was facing straight ahead instead of slumping to one side. She normally lobs her head to one side in the infant seat. We got pictures of her asleep in the chair, but they aren’t up as of this writing. I’ll get caught up at some point, I hope…there’s always tomorrow

Today wasn’t all that packed of a day, we went for a walk in the morning, showered and packed a picnic lunch and took Ella to a playground for the first time. It was an awesome playground. First Baptist Church in Woodstock has a great setup for kids and it is open all the time. She rode on the swings and I took her down the slide once. We played and ate our lunch then headed home. Ella didn’t take a very long nap in the morning and she fell asleep in her new car seat *ugh* (that’s another post, entirely) on the way home. It was so cute, we have pictures but they aren’t in the gallery yet. I’ll update this post with one once we have them up. So we had to wake her up once we got home to get her out of the seat…bad idea. She never did finish her afternoon nap. I was making a batch of homebrew today with my new outdoor cooker (thank you auntie Lindsey!) so when I finished and came inside, there was a delirious Ella chatting up a storm with Mommy. When I say delirious, I’m not kidding. That poor baby was so tired she was laughing at the color yellow. She had a goofy look on her face and was talking like crazy. We finally got her tired enough to try to put down for a nap, got her fed and I layed her down. She started crying before I left the room and she WAILED after I was gone. We gave up after half an hour of screaming and Mommy went to check on her. After another 20-30 minutes of crying she finally went to sleep. We gave her an hour while we ate dinner and then woke her up. She was not happy about that at all. But she played with Maddie and her mood got a little better. She’s been asleep since around 7:30 and hasn’t made a peep. I was so upset earlier I thought I’d throw up, Mommy is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than I am with Ella’s little break-downs.

This weekend and today have been exceptionally difficult and hard to understand. Please note that this has nothing to do with my little family and yet it has everything to do with Mommy and Ella. Our associate pastor’s wife passed away suddenly just before the weekend. She was only 36. They had three children, 10, 7 and 3. I have spent a lot of time trying to understand why this would happen. How can Andy possibly move on from here? I have been awed by his faith. We went to the funeral today and I was inspired by the love and strength that Andy display for both his wife and God. His euology for Cheri was beautiful and at times heart breaking. I cannot imagine the courage and determination it took to stand before the people who have turned to him for years for guidance in their faith walk in such a time of grief and need of his own. I still can’t quite fathom how a man is supposed to go on without the most important support structure in his mortal life. My heart has been filled with sorrow for Andy and his children. The youngest will have a difficult time in the years to come even remembering her mother. How is that fair?

In Andy’s eulogy, he gave those in attendance one piece of advice and he reiterated it after the funeral when we went to see him: Husbands, love your wives.

I do love Mommy. And I love Ella. I love them both more than I can ever express. I cannot imagine losing either of them. I can only hope that I would have the strength of faith and trust in God to display the courage Andy did today. I know this post isn’t about Ella and I know it isn’t very upbeat, but I needed an avenue to express my feelings in as cohesive a manner as I could. I’m still not sure I completely understand my feelings, but I know that I will love my family with more passion every day.

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about taking my six month old daughter to see fireworks this year. I was proven wrong on my opinion. I thought it would be too loud and too late for our little angel. Ella really seemed to like hanging out in the parking lot where we watched the fireworks before they started. She was a little tired but we had shifted her napping schedule a bit for the day to make it a little easier on her. When the fireworks started, I climbed into the bed of the truck with her and sat in a reclining beach chair so she could look up at the sky. She watched the whole show and hardly ever diverted her attention from the bright flashes in the sky. I had to cover her ears a little during the finale (she was trying to do it herself, but wasn’t sure how) but other than thay she really seemed to enjoy the show. I couldn’t have had a better Fourth of July, with my baby on my lap, that was the best part!

We got Ella her own inflatable pool this weekend and took it for a test-dip today. I filled it up around 1:30pm or 2:00pm and we were hoping it would warm up quickly given the heat outside. I should have known that ambient heat doesn’t transfer very quickly considering my heat transfer courses in college. But then again, I always get the cycle on air conditioners reversed when trying to diagnose issues, so maybe I just didn’t learn what I thought I did. We also lost out on the radiant and direct heat contributions from the sun since we set the pool up on the screened portion of the back porch. So it was a little cold when Ella and I got in. Ella would probably have a bit of input on how cool the water was if she could talk. She wasn’t too sure of it at first, but she warmed up to it (no pun intended) in a few minutes. She was splashing and gibbering VERY loudly once she got used to the idea. I could hear her echo in the woods. She liked watching me squirt the dogs with her bath toys too. She even enjoyed watching Maddie try to drink her pool. It was a pretty cool experience I would say. I think she deffinitely enjoyed it. And now we have an area sheltered from the sun where she can splash and play all summer!

Today, we had a busy day of errands and shopping. I know, I know, it was Father’s Day, but I’d rather just spend a whole day with my family regardless of what that entails. In the middle of our errands we went to lunch at a new Mexican restaurant in town here. They were giving out balloons to the the kids in the restaurant and water bottles to the dads. The weirdest part was hearing someone other than Mommy say “Happy Father’s Day” to me. In fact, I looked at the waiter and said, “Huh?”. I finally got acclimated to the concept. We asked the waiter to let us have a balloon for Ella, since she had never had one before. The link below is video of her enjoying her balloon.

After lunch we headed to Wal-Mart for baby supplies and the such. Mommy was holding Ella and kissing her and saying “kisses” while she did it. Suddenly, she said “kisses” and Ella held her mouth open and looked right at Mommy. So even though they were open-mouthed and a little sloppy (not so gross now that I’m a daddy). She had a good time giving us kisses. When I was putting her to bed, I had her in the nursery and I said “kisses, Ella” and she dropped her pacifier and gave me a big wet one. She is such a cutie!

We had a busy evening today. I came home early from work to help Mommy manage the dogs while the bug man was here and then we had to figure out the rest of the day. Groceries, bank, dinner and other errands. Where to go, when to go there, manage the time to have some relaxation in there as well. So we opted for a simple evening of dinner and grocery shopping. Ella seems to enjoy the grocery store now that she can sit up in the cart, but she gets the “hold me, Hold Me, HOLD ME”‘s throughout the trip. Its starts off cute as jabbering and Ella being as cute as she can. Then she gets a little loud and demanding. At any rate, the grocery trip went a little late so Ella’s bedtime was fast approaching as we got back home. She snuck in a short powernap on the drive home and we started the process of feeding her and getting her prepped for bed. All went well (except for some fussy eating). Mommy took her to bed as I was washing some dishes and playing with my new ice cream maker (more on this later). We were milling about in the kitchen 20 or so minute later thinking that Ella was fast asleep when she started to cry. Then she started to wail. Mommy rushed upstairs to see what was wrong and I was just a little behind her.

It turns out that little miss Ella has figured out how to roll from her back to her stomach. But when she did so, she woke herself up and couldn’t get back over. Of course, this upsets a tiny baby and she started crying. Her pacifier was clipped to her onesie on her stomach so that was likely uncomfortable and part of the problem. So we got her turned over nad calmed down and went about the evening business of catch-up. Who knew when you had a kid you’d spend every minute the baby is asleep trying to get caught up before the baby wakes up!

So over the course of the night, she managed to turn herself over five times. Every time except the last, she would cry and wake herself up. In the morning I went to get her out of bed and she was on her stomach playing with her crib toy, smiling at me. The little stinker got to the point where she decided it was fun to get to her stomach!

She is so cute with her two little tiny teeth under her tongue! When she smiles and moves her toungue these tiny two little teeth peek out from her lip. Its cute and heart-breaking at the same time. She’s growing up waaay to fast. *sigh*

We were visitng Tennessee this weekend for a family cookout and to let Ella spend some time with my family. We were playing together Saturday morning when I started putting a burp cloth over her face and asking her “Where’s Ella?” to see what she would do. She pulled the cloth off her face and smiled every time. She eventually started holding the burp cloth up over her face and dropping it on her own. She even started popping her face up really fast over the cloth before I could ask where she was.

UPDATE: Sunday night after we got home, Mommy was holding Ella on her leg and she was putting her face against Mommy’s shoulder. I asked “where’s Ella?” and she popped up off Mommy’s shoulder with a big smile. We had to stop playing because I was waking her up and it was betime. I love playing baby games!

Who knew a six month old baby could throw a temper tantrum? And why didn’t you tell us about it? Is this one of those golden nuggets of knowledge experienced parents keep for themselves so they can laugh and think “Yep, been there”? I was trying to get Ella ready for bed tonight while Mommy works on cake stuff but she was NOT happy. She usually fusses a little when you try to put a shirt on her, she doesn’t like her face being covered even for a second. So as soon as the onsie went over her head she started screaming and kicking. She turned her head back and forth and rolled her bottom lip out so far I swear she inverted her jaw. I tried to dress her as fast as I could, but the tantrum compounded the normal difficulty of a wiggly baby to a near herculean feat of strength, skill and patience. I managed to get her dress and thought to myself, “screw the socks, I’ve got to get this kid a bottle!” So I trotted down the steps, screaming child in tow to an already prepared bottle thanks to Mommy. By this point, Ella had gotten herself so worked up that she cried through the entire feeding and fussed herself to sleep. *sigh* A sleeping baby is God’s reward for enduring the frustrations of an unhappy one. She is so beautiful and peaceful when she’s asleep in her crib. It makes tantrums like tonight’s well worth surviving!

Today we went to a first birthday pary for one of Mommy’s coworker’s baby. They had a pool party for their son and Mommy made the cake for the party (of course). We have the cutest little bathing suit for Ella and she is adorable in it. When it was time to swim, I got in and let Ella gradually feel her way in the water. Tori (Mommy’s friend), had an extra floatie that we put her in so she could hang out in the pool on her own (heavily supervised by both of us, of course). Her floatie was a crab that looked a lot like one of her favorite bath toys and she had fun just leaning across it and kicking in the water. She really seemed to enjoy the water but she didn’t splash as much as I would have thought. It was a new experience for her and those take a little time for her to adjust to. In all, I think she had a great time at the party. It was a lot of fun to let her experience something new like that.

Here is a direct link to Ella in her bathing suit from the gallery: http://doug.kerplooey.com/BabyBlog/gallery/main.php/f/20090606

Ella, Mommy and I got to see that wonderful Dr. Smith again today! He is such an awesme pediatrician. Ella is doing very well, in Dr. Smith’s words she is just perfect. She weighed 17 pounds, 6.4 ounces this time around and we can feel it when we carry her! She only grew about one and a half inches in height to 26.5. She is still in the 75th percentile for height and weight and her head circumference is staying in the 25-50th percentile range. She’s hitting all of her milestones just like she’s supposed to and she was such a happy baby today for the doctor and the nurse. We figured she would cry around them since that has been her thing lately but she did very well. She was awesome with her shots! She cried a little which is absolutely expected, nobody likes needles but she recovered quickly and snuggled with her Daddy. Dr. Smith seemed very pleased and complimented us on the job we’re doing. He seems to be relieved that we are so relaxed about her in general.

So I’m sure every parent has had this experience. And as soon as I describe you’ll probably have a “been there, done that” moment. We thought maybe people were being a little dramatic, or playing up the drama just for emphasis, boy were we wrong! I’m talking about the infamous, no need for introductions, all the way up the back, on the clothes and not comin’ out, MEGA POO FROM HELL. Also known as the blowout, the butt bomb, the baby nuke and the “Oh my God, call an exorcist!” poo. We’re talking a stench that rivals anything we’ve experienced to date. And a mess that leaves you dumbfounded and almost paralyzed as to what to do first. Ella’s onsie was messy almost to her shoulder blades. We had to take her out of it from the top down (they usually go over the head). Mommy was changing what we knew was a dirty diaper, but we never expected this. I was getting ready for our evening walk when I heard “I’m going to need some help…and some paper towels and…oh my God!” I thought maybe it was jsut really messy and all over her bum (she’s had those before and we thought they were bad, HAHAHA!). Mommy then said, “I’m not kidding, I need some help, now” so I grabbed the paper towel roll and left my shoe untied. I walked over to the changing table to see World War Three taking place in my daughter’s diaper. And to top it off, Mommy had given her prunes today because she hadn’t gone in a day or so…ooops! It took us about ten minutes to get the mess cleaned up and Ella changed into some new clothes. She was happy as a clam the whole time (she must have felt GREAT after all of that). She was smiling and laughing, almost like she was saying “Ha ha, you have to deal with all of that and I get to lay here!”, So the moral of the story. Whenever someone tells you about “the blowout”, believe them, you cannot make this stuff up!

Today when I got home, Mommy was all smiles and excited and said she had a surprise for me when she got off the phone. She was busy with a cake client at the moment. So I took Ella who was misbehaving with her bottle and tried to finish feeding her while Mommy worked her consultation. When she got off the phone she said to wash my hands really good, I knew what the surprise was then! Ella has sprouted her first tooth. Its just barely above her gums right now but that little bugger is sharp! We’ve been thinking for so long that she was going to get a top tooth first, but she proved us wrong. This is another one of those happy, yet sad moments in our life. We’re so happy and proud of our baby’s first tooth, but we’re sad because it means she growing up so fast…*sigh*.
